Although there are many important journalism grantmakers in the philanthropic world, seeking funding from foundations is a challenging path.
Most local, private and community foundations do not list journalism or media as a program area. Journalism philanthropy tends to be national, regional or sometimes metropolitan in scope. There are also funders out there supporting coverage of specific subjects — such as environment or health — but those grants tend to be story specific, and not aimed at an entire enterprise.
